We need creative volunteers with experience in cutting, sewing velvet curtains to dress up the black box theater.
The black box theater is NIA's performing niche, where our creatives from Sint Maarten can showcase their talents.
The National Institute of Arts received professional heavy velvet curtains from another performing arts theater (Schouwburg in Deventer, the Netherlands), who they want to reuse and repurpose to support the Black Box setting.
🎭 Curtains Up for Creativity – Help Dress the Black Box!
The Black Box Theater is the beating heart of the National Institute of Arts (NIA), the intimate performance space where the creative talents of Sint Maarten come alive. From theater and dance to spoken word and music, this is where our local artists shine.
For SXM DOET, we are calling on creative and skilled volunteers to help us transform this special space.
✂️ Project Part 1: Repurposing Professional Theater Curtains
NIA received beautiful, heavy velvet stage curtains from the Schouwburg in Deventer (The Netherlands). These professional curtains now need expert and creative hands to:
Measure and cut the fabric to fit the Black Box Theater
Sew and tailor the curtains to create a polished, professional look
Help dress the theater space to enhance lighting, acoustics, and atmosphere
If you have experience with sewing, tailoring, upholstery, or working with thick fabrics — we would love your support!
🛠 Project Part 2: Refresh & Organize the Creative Space
Behind every performance is a well-organized backstage area. We also need volunteers to:
Prepare storage cabinets and install shelves with plywood and nails
Paint and freshen up storage spaces
Clean and organize the center

Together, we will not only improve the look of the Black Box, but also create a functional, inspiring environment where Sint Maarten’s creatives can thrive. Join us in supporting the arts, because when the stage is ready, talent can shine.
